What are Medicare Supplement Plans?

Medigap (also known as Medicare supplement insurance) is a type of insurance provided by various private health companies. It is sold to supplement Medicare for those who are eligible in the United States. Medigap insurance covers many of the co-pays and a portion of the co-insurance that is related to hospital (Medicare Part A), skilled nursing, home health care, durable medical equipment, and outpatient (Medicare Part B) doctor charges. Medigap's name describes its function, which is to cover the "gap" between the fees paid to providers by Medicare Parts A and B for their services and the total amount allowed to be billed for those services. Guidelines are set by the United States Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).
